About CNC Plastic Cutting

What Is Plastic CNC Machining?

Plastic CNC machining is a highly versatile manufacturing process, which can be used to create a wide variety of plastic products. CNC machining is a subtractive process, which uses various techniques, such as milling and turning, to achieve the desired result.

Plastic CNC Machining uses a computer-controlled machine tool to create complex, precision-crafted parts from plastic polymers. A wide range of common plastics can be used for Plastic CNC Milling, including Delrin (POM), Nylon, Acrylic, Teflon (PTFE), Polyether (Peek), and Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW).

There are two main types of CNC Machining – CNC Milling and CNC Turning:

CNC Milling

CNC Milling can mass-produce plastic products to tight tolerances at fast turnaround rates.

The process of Plastic CNC Milling involves fastening the plastic workpiece to a worktable. The CNC machine then uses a rotating cutting tool to remove material from the workpiece, operating to the design specification. This cutting tool moves along multiple axes to precisely-craft the shape of the final product.

When programmed to run along the X, Y, and Z axes, this tool can create complex shapes and features, including holes, slots, pockets, and contours, and it can also be used to create flat or irregular shapes.

CNC Turning

During the CNC Turning process, the plastic material is fixed on a rotating CNC lathe. The cutting tool then removes the excess material until the desired shape is formed.

Typically, this process is used for creating cylindrical shapes, although conical shapes can also be achieved using taper CNC turning.

The Applications Of A CNC Plastic Cutting Service

CNC Plastic Machining is used in a wide range of sectors including Automotive and Motorsport, Medical, Oil and Gas, Aerospace and Defensive, and Nuclear.

This process can be used for a variety of purposes such as:

  • Production of lenses – such as those used in cameras, telescopes, and microscopes
  • Plastic parts for appliances used in the food and beverage industries
  • Medical appliances, implants, and prosthetics
  • Automobile and aircraft parts
  • Electrical components

The Advantages Of CNC Plastic Machining

CNC Plastic Machining offers several advantages to businesses and manufacturers, including:

  • Precision – Compared with plastic injection moulding and 3D printing, CNC Plastic Machining is the most accurate rapid prototyping method. This accuracy ensures repeatability for future production runs.
  • Complex Designs – CNC Plastic Machining is suitable for creating both simple and complex designs, thanks to CNC machines’ ability to cut along multiple axes. CNC machines are more effective at creating complex designs than even 3D printing.
  • Tight Tolerances – Due to their high levels of precision, CNC machines are capable of manufacturing products to tight tolerances. In fact, they are better at meeting tight tolerances than either plastic injection moulding or 3D printing.
  • Versatility – CNC Plastic Machining is suitable for use with a wide range of plastic polymers.
  • Significant Reduction Of Defects – Thanks to its precision, CNC Plastic Machining produces significantly fewer defects than other production methods.
  • Minimal Waste – Due to the reduced defects, less resources are wasted, saving you money!
  • Flexibility – CNC Plastic Machining is suitable for creating a wide range of products with diverse shapes and complexities.
