What Is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is a versatile manufacturing process used to create a broad range of products from materials such as plastics, metals, acrylics, and wood.

This subtractive technique involves removing material from a base workpiece using computer-controlled machinery to achieve precise results. Known for its accuracy and ability to handle complex designs, CNC machining is a popular choice in many industries.

There are two primary methods in CNC machining: CNC Milling and CNC Turning.

The Two Types Of CNC Machining

CNC Milling is a quick and efficient method suited for mass production. It uses a rotating cutting tool controlled by a CNC machine to remove material from a stationary workpiece on a table.

The tool moves along multiple axes, allowing for the creation of detailed shapes such as holes, slots, and contours.

CNC Turning, on the other hand, involves a rotating CNC lathe that holds the workpiece. The cutting tool shapes the material gradually as the workpiece spins, resulting in cylindrical or conical forms.

This method is perfect for producing a variety of cylindrical components with high precision.

The Advantages Of CNC Machining

CNC machining offers several key benefits for manufacturers:

  • Precision: CNC machining delivers exceptional accuracy, often surpassing other methods like plastic injection moulding or 3D printing. This high level of precision ensures consistent results, which is crucial for both prototyping and large-scale production.
  • Complex Designs: With its ability to move along multiple axes, CNC machining excels at creating detailed and intricate designs. It can achieve a level of complexity that often exceeds what is possible with 3D printing.
  • Tight Tolerances: CNC machines can produce parts with extremely tight tolerances, outperforming plastic injection moulding and 3D printing in this regard. This capability ensures that parts fit together precisely as intended.
  • Plastic Compatibility: CNC machining works with a broad range of plastic materials, including Delrin (POM), Nylon, Acrylic, Teflon (PTFE), Polyether (PEEK), and Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW). This versatility makes it ideal for manufacturing various plastic products.
  • Defect Reduction: The precision of CNC machining helps to significantly reduce defects, resulting in higher-quality final products compared to other manufacturing techniques.
  • Waste Reduction: By minimising defects, CNC machining also reduces material waste, leading to cost savings on materials for clients.
  • Flexibility: CNC machining is highly flexible, capable of producing a wide range of shapes and complexities to meet diverse project needs.
